"dear chicago,  you'll never guess.

you know the girl you said i'd meet someday?

well, i've got something to confess ...

she picked me up on friday ...

asked me if she reminded me of you.

i just laughed

and lit a cigarette,

said "that's impossible to do."

my life's gotten simple since ...

and it fluctuates so much:  happy ...

and sad

and back again.

i'm not crying now too much."

"cause you can't jump the track ...

we're like cars on a cable ...

and life's like an hourglass, glued to the table ...

no one can find the rewind button, girl ...

so cradle your head in your hands ...

and breathe ...

just breathe."

"i walk into this room ...

oh, all eyes on me now ...

but i do not know the people inside ...

they look straight through me, these eyes ...

seeking more wisdom than i have to give away ...

realize, realize what you are ...."

"every night i read this novel about you ...

holding roses in the pouring rain ...

but the ending's tore up, trying to hail a cab ...

think no one can read you, but i can."

"if i was in a movie i would hold my head up high.

and if i was in a movie i would never be this shy.

i would shout out loud and be so proud of what i have to say.

and if i was in a movie i would never let you get away.

if i was in a movie i would stand the test of time.

if i was in a movie i would get away with crime.

i would run so fast and always last the distance of the day.

and if i was in a movie i would never let you get away.

this is not hollywood.

there is no camera in my room.

this is not hollywood.

flowers grow

before they bloom.

well you can hide away when you walk in the dusky light of night.

this is not hollywood.

this is my life.

if i was in a movie i would never be this sad.

if i was in a movie i would have more than i have.

i would show the world i'm just a girl who has so much to say.

and if i was in a movie i would never have let you get away."

"yeah i was a south bound child ...

yeah i had a small town life.

but i turned out allright in the north...

livin' that southern kind of life."

"one shot...

one beer...

and a kiss before i go."

"all the time we have for life ...

thinking about the lives we had...

together...

whatever gets you through today
...."

"see how she moves through the door ...

how she loses her keys ...

how she loses her cool.

watching blackbirds scatter through the trees ...

how she flips from the back to the front reading magazines.

oh my God ... i miss those things.

and it's a hard way to fall.

and this ain't the easy way down.

and it's a hard thing to love anyone, anyhow."

"if today were not an endless highway ...

if tonight was not a crooked trail ...

if tomorrow wasn't such a long time ...

then lonesome would mean nothing to me at all."

"where is the moment we needed the most?

you kick up the leaves and the magic is lost.

they tell me your blue skies fade to grey ...

they tell me your passion's gone away ...."

"if you're gonna play in texas ...

you've gotta have a fiddle in the band."

wore my red shoes again … getting worn out from all of the wandering.

i was just gonna hit him but i’m gonna kill him now.

there's a land where our shackles ...

… turn to diamonds …

… where we trade in our rags …

… for a royal crown …

… in that place our oppressors hold no power...

… and the doors of the King are thrown wide.

take a guess at where i stand …

… pick a number ... one to two …

… take a look at the back of your hand.

she needs wide open spaces ... room to make her big mistakes.

... she needs new faces ... she knows the high stakes.

put your best dress and your high heels on and dream you’re gone.

and wear it out tonight … for all the boys you think could out do me …

…or better still be my winding wheel.

but this war brings me to my knees.

you’re at your best with an ache in your chest.

open up my hands … open arms …

... open my eyes  ...

... open my heart up wide  ...

... revolution’s ...

... on the inside .

there is a girl  inside.

two drifters off to see the world…

… there's such a lot of world to see …

... we're after the same rainbow's end …

waiting round the bend … my huckleberry friend…

but tomorrow i'll be in another town.

fathers be good to your daughters, daughters will love like you do.

and you are the dancing queen, young and sweet ...

and i am thinking it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes
are mirror images and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned.

home for me is beneath the pine trees that grow to be about sixty feet tall.

she stops and checks her reflection...

it's a good thing i don't need you to stay.

the ones who really love you walk up and down outside the wall.

ask any good detective, he will tell you, it's the eyes that always give the truth away.

this heart'll be a true believer if you stay awhile.

come pick me up ... i wish you would.

she picked up the telephone, all she heard was a dial tone.  she really thought she heard it ring this time.

Lord if i'm the clay then let Your living water flow.

and something in my soul was certainly there to stay.

isn't it hard sometimes?  isn't it lonely?

but if you break down, i'll drive out and find you.  if you forget my love, i'll try and remind you.

oh my sweet carolina ... what compels me to go ...

when i've shown you that i just don't care, when i'm throwing punches in the air...

and yes i'm just one more girl on the stage.

everybody's gotta get away sometimes.  forget about yourself for awhile...

...seems to me that all you need is a ragtop car and a ride with me.
